.3. Haydn Allegro Moderate Op. 64-5, Hob.III: 63, 1st movement in D major
See the commentary in Volume 1 for an overview of the biography. Haydn composed 68 string quartets (83 songs including forgery and arrangements). This string quartet entitled "Skylark" was composed in 1790 in D major, Op. 64-5, Hob. III: 63, at the request of the violinist and businessman Johann Tost of the Marquis of Esterhazy. It is a string quartet included in the "3rd Tost Quartet". This "Allegro moderate" is the first movement of four movements. The sonata form of the first theme is used and familiar as the name of this string quartet because it is reminiscent of the bright and carefree "lark" cry. Haydn has long called "Divertimento" instead of the name "Quartet". The name "quartet" was used in his autographs from his work 42 (1785). |
