Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) A Jewish composer and music teacher from Switzerland. Born in Geneva, he studied with Isai and others at the Brussels Conservatory. He then studied at the Frankfurt Conservatory. He traveled all over Europe until 1916 when he moved to the United States. 1924 He gains US citizenship. He became Principal Music Director of the newly established Cleveland School of Music in 1920, where he continued until 1825, then returned to Switzerland and later returned to the United States and died in Portland. His early works were influenced by Neo-German music and French Impressionism, and his maturity relied on Jewish liturgical and folk music. This song is the first of three songs for cello and piano entitled "From Jewish Life". |
